Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he,SJ Journal front cover

I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you;

I will sustain you and I will rescue you.

Isaiah 46:4

Steps on Your Journey to Know God More Intimately:

  • Some of the definitions of sustain are support, provide for, maintain and encourage.
  • God is the One who holds us up and keeps us going. Look at the verses below to see how God sustains us.
  • Psalm 3:5: “I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.”
  • Psalm 41:3: “The Lord will sustain him on his sickbed and restore him from his bed of illness.”
  • See also Nehemiah 9:21; Psalm 54:4; 55:22.
  • In what ways have you seen God sustain you?
  • In what ways do you need the Lord to sustain you?
  • When I was doing a single-parent family ministry, it was exhausting. I taught weekly classes, made meals for single parents, had a food bank, did one-on-one ministry, plus raised my own sons on my own. I became weary. During that time, the Lord sustained me. He held me up, encouraged me and provided for me.
  • Thank God that He will sustain you throughout your life—to your old age and gray hairs!

A Prayer for You:

Thank You, Lord, that You are the One who sustains me. You encourage me, support me and provide for me. Thank You that You made me, will carry me, sustain me and rescue me even to my old age. That is so comforting. Help me to remember this throughout all my days.

Blessings on you as you get to know God,

Gaylyn Williams, co-author Keys to Joy: How to Unlock God’s Gift of Lasting Happiness

Bob Creson,  President/CEO of Wycliffe Bible Translators USA, says about Keys to Joy:

“John records a wonderful statement made by Jesus, “I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! (John 15:11 NLT)  Jesus wants our joy to overflow.  What are these things that Jesus spoke of?  In this book, Keys to Joy,  Ken and Gaylyn Williams, the father-daughter writing team, do us a favor by reminding us of the things that lead to joy in the Christian life.  Based on the study of God’s Word, the contents of this book will lead the reader to a greater sense of who God is, and a deep abiding peace in the One who loves us and wants a relationship with his children.

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live,

but Christ who lives in me.

And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in

the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Galatians 2:20 (ESV)

Excerpted  from  The Surprising Joy of Exploring God’s Heart: A Daily Adventure with 365 of His Names

Steps on Your Journey to Know God More Intimately:

  • Look at the first part of the name. What does it mean that Jesus is the Son of God?
  • Think about this name. Although Jesus is the Son of God—the God of the Universe—He loved you and gave Himself for you. He took your place, paying for your sins so you could live with Him forever. Now that’s love! Can you imagine a love greater than that?
  • I’m sitting in the Jericho Center, an incredible house of prayer (one of my favorite places to be!). The worship team just sang a song with these words: “You laid Your glory aside. You signed up for our death row. You paid the penalty that I owe.”
  • Think about the words to that song. Jesus was in Heaven, surrounded by astounding glory and adoration. He laid all that aside for you and me. We were on “death row,” condemned to die for our sins, because we couldn’t stand before a holy God. Jesus, the perfect Son of God, signed up to take our place on death row. He paid our penalty. That is incredible love!

A Prayer for You:

Thank You, Lord, for Your marvelous love for me. Thank You that though You are the Son of God, yet You loved me so much that You gave Yourself for me. I can’t even begin to understand the depths of Your love. Open my eyes to be able to see how much You really love me.

Ken Williams, Ph.D, Founder of International Training Partners, co-author of Keys to Joy and my dad!) said about The Surprising Joy of Exploring God’s Heart:

“I’ve always found great joy in exploring God’s unique identity and have studied it often. But this book has opened my eyes in new ways to appreciate who He is, and to love Him more than ever. Each day is a heart-warming adventure as I come to know Him more, and examine my relationship with Him in new ways.”

Blessings on you as you get to know God,

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said,

“I am El-Shaddai—God Almighty.

Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life.”

Genesis 17:1 (NLT)

Excerpted  from

The Surprising Joy of Exploring God’s Heart: A Daily Adventure with 365 of His Names

Steps on Your Journey to Know God More Intimately:

  • El Shaddai in Hebrew means the all-sufficient God, God Almighty or the One Who is all-powerful.
  • In 2 Corinthians 12:9, Jesus said, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” God’s grace is all you need. El Shaddai is sufficient for you and for me.
  • Meditate on the name, God Almighty. He is all powerful. He is sufficient for all that you need.
  • What does it mean to you today, knowing He is all you need and His grace is enough?
  • Thank and praise the Lord that He is God Almighty.

A Prayer for You:

El Shaddai, I’m so grateful that You are the all-sufficient God. You are all I need in every area of my life. Thank You that I can depend on You. Teach me to rely less on myself and more on You, God Almighty.

God’s Name: My Strong Champion

Pushed to the wall, I called to God;
    from the wide open spaces, he answered.
God’s now at my side and I’m not afraid;
    who would dare lay a hand on me?
God’s my strong champion;
    I flick off my enemies like flies.
