God’s Name: My Father’s God
The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.
He is my God, and I will praise him,
my father’s God, and I will exalt him.
Exodus 15:2
Steps on Your Journey to Know God More Intimately:
- The Hebrew for this name is Ab Elohim. Ab means father or ancestor. Elohim is the plural form of God.
- If your parents or other ancestors were believers, what does it mean to you that God is your Father’s God? How does that affect you?
- Growing up as a missionary kid I watched God provide for my family. Whenever my sisters or I asked my parents for anything expensive, their response was, “Let’s ask God.” It was incredible how God provided for us, including giving us a very nice house to live in rent-free when we came back from Guatemala with no money. I have a great view of God because of my parents.
- What if you don’t know anyone in your family who are or were believers? How can you relate to this name? Ask the Lord to show you. Is it possible you have ancestors in the past who you didn’t know who knew God?
- Meditate on this name today. Ask the Lord what He wants you to see from it.
God, I want to praise You and exalt You because You are such a great God. You deserve praise and adoration, whether or not my parents are or were believers. I want future generations to be able to look back to me and praise You, because of my relationship with You.
